Italy: Securing a new road from day one with autonomous solar lighting.

As part of a new road project in Italy, local authorities sought a solution to make this infrastructure safer, modern, and environmentally friendly from the moment it opened. The goal was to ensure efficient lighting immediately, without relying on a connection to the electrical grid by installing autonomous solar street lights.

Faced with an area lacking electrical infrastructure, it was necessary to choose a solution that was quick to deploy, reliable, and sustainable, capable of meeting road safety requirements while minimizing the project’s environmental impact.

In this context, an autonomous solar lighting solution was implemented using UP2 solar street lights, installed locally with our partner 3S

Elettronica.

A newly secured road from the moment it opens

  • Rapid opening to traffic : the infrastructure had to be operational immediately, with no transitional phase and reliable lighting from day one
  • User safety priority : optimal visibility was essential to prevent accident risks.
  • No electrical grid available : no existing infrastructure was available to power conventional public lighting.

The goal was therefore to quickly secure the road, while controlling costs and reducing environmental impact. In the case of a traditional grid-connected installation, this would have involved significant additional costs and delays. The use of an autonomous solar solution proved to be an appropriate response to the site’s constraints.

The challenge: lighting a road without access to the electrical grid

The lack of an electrical grid made any solution requiring cabling or a grid connection complex.

Excavation works, administrative procedures, and connection operations would have led to delays incompatible with the project timeline.

Lighting had to be fully operational from the very first day of use in order to immediately ensure user safety.

The challenge was to combine rapid deployment, energy autonomy, and reliability, without compromising safety.

The solution: 6 autonomous UP2 solar street lights

To meet these challenges, an autonomous solar lighting solution from Sunna Design was deployed with 6 UP2 solar street lights along this new road section. Each lighting point operates independently from the electrical grid.

  • 100% autonomous solution : no connection to the electrical grid is required.
  • All-in-one technology : each street light integrates a solar panel, battery, and intelligent energy management system.
  • Road-adapted configuration:

The 6 lighting points were evenly distributed along the road axis to ensure consistent and continuous roadway coverage.

A color temperature of 3000K was selected to provide both comfortable and efficient lighting, ensuring good road visibility while reducing glare for users.

Finally, the entire system was optimized for roadway use, ensuring performance levels suited to safety requirements and nighttime traffic conditions.

This solution guarantees reliable service continuity, even in the most remote areas.

A rapid installation with no trenching or grid connection

The solution was designed to meet the project constraints with fast deployment and immediate efficiency. Thanks to their autonomous design, the street lights were installed without requiring heavy infrastructure, significantly simplifying the construction site.

  • Fast and simplified installation: deployment was carried out without trenching or cabling, greatly reducing construction time and on-site technical constraints.
  • Immediate commissioning: once installed, the street lights were operational without delay, providing road lighting from the very opening to traffic.
  • Reduced environmental impact: the absence of civil engineering works and the use of renewable energy helped limit the project’s overall footprint.

Results: a road illuminated from day one

From the moment it was commissioned, the project delivered concrete and immediately measurable results. The road could be operated under optimal safety conditions without waiting for a conventional electrical infrastructure, confirming the relevance of an autonomous solution for this type of application.

  • Immediate road safety and driving comfort: lighting ensured safe night-time traffic from the opening of the road, while providing good visual comfort and improved roadway perception during night driving.
  • Significant reduction in infrastructure costs: the absence of grid connection eliminated investments related to heavy civil works and electrical equipment, with also €0 electricity bill to add.
  • Time savings on the project: the rapid installation process allowed the road opening deadlines to be met, without compromising lighting quality.
  • Greatly reduced maintenance: the autonomous solution limits on-site interventions and ensures simple, long-term operation.
  • Controlled environmental impact: the use of solar energy reduces energy consumption as well as CO₂ emissions associated with the project.

This project demonstrates that autonomous solar lighting is a high-performance, cost-effective, and sustainable solution, perfectly suited to the constraints of modern road infrastructure delivered in record time.
