Home Solar lighting blog Case studies Mérignac’s Aeroparc: Innovative Solar Lighting for a Leading Industrial Hub
In the heart of Mérignac’s Aeroparc, the Cockpit embodies the future of industrial infrastructures. This hub dedicated to the aeronautics, space, and defense (ASD) industries has made a strategic choice by integrating innovative solar lighting solutions. The goal: reduce energy consumption and enhance the site’s sustainability. Thanks to the expertise of Sunna Design, a local leader in intelligent solar lighting, about forty autonomous streetlights have been installed. They illuminate the parking areas and pedestrian pathways, offering a solution that combines performance, innovation, and environmental commitment.
Mérignac – FRANCE
From its inception, the Cockpit, headquarters of the Bordeaux Technowest Technopole, embraced a forward-looking approach. Bordeaux Technowest, Colas, and Quartus, the project operator, decided to rethink the original lighting design to incorporate a more sustainable and efficient solution.
The choice of solar lighting was deliberate. It addresses two key objectives: reducing environmental impact and optimizing energy management across the site. Sunna Design, a solar lighting expert based in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, was the ideal partner. Their technological expertise and local presence made it possible to deploy a tailor-made solution perfectly suited to the Cockpit’s needs.
The Cockpit has been awarded the “BREEAM Very Good” certification, a testament to the project’s strong commitment to sustainability. This label highlights high energy performance and reduced environmental impact, making the Cockpit an exemplary model of sustainable construction. Sunna Design’s solar lighting solutions played a key role in achieving this certification by meeting strict environmental standards while ensuring optimal outdoor lighting for site users.
To meet the Cockpit’s requirements, Sunna Design deployed a customized solar lighting system combining energy efficiency, durability, and intelligent management. Two ranges of streetlights were selected to match the site’s different zones: the compact, all-in-one ISSL range and the UP range, known for its versatility and powerful lighting capabilities.
A total of 41 solar streetlights were installed, covering the parking areas, pedestrian pathways, and logistics zones. Each system was carefully selected to guarantee optimal performance and exemplary energy efficiency. Thanks to SunnaCore, Sunna Design’s patented electronic board, energy management is optimized to ensure 365 nights of lighting per year, even in low-sunlight conditions
The layout was designed to meet the specific needs of each area. UP2 models illuminate the main roads, while UP4 units with Single LED lanterns light the delivery zones and access routes to the covered parking. The UP4 Dual, equipped with dual lanterns, provides uniform lighting for the various outdoor parking spaces. Finally, the iSSL models were installed at the entrance square, combining aesthetics and performance.
Reliable and durable, these streetlights require minimal maintenance while offering excellent longevity. With the SunnAPP, users can monitor equipment status and access performance history directly at the foot of each pole.
The Cockpit of Mérignac illustrates a new generation of industrial infrastructure where energy efficiency and technological innovation go hand in hand. Integrating locally designed solar lighting solutions supports the regional economy while setting a benchmark for industrial energy transition. This project demonstrates that efficiency, sustainability, and environmental responsibility can be combined, offering an inspiring reference for future industrial hubs.
