Home Solar lighting blog Case studies Lubumbashi’s main roads light up with solar street lamps
In 2019, Sunna Design partnered with Congo Energy on a large-scale solar lighting project in the city of Lubumbashi. Through the installation of over 200 solar street lamp units in one of the biggest cities of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the project has contributed to the revival of public spaces while integrating them into the logic of the city of tomorrow: connected and less energy-consuming thanks to solar technology.

Congo Energy and Sunna Design join forces to implement a solar street lighting system on a very long artery of the city: the Kasavubu Avenue. Congolese company specialized in the maintenance and rehabilitation of electric infrastructures as well as renewable energies, Congo Energy turned to Sunna Design’s solar solutions to meet the specifications of this solar street lamps installation project.
A total of nearly 220 solar street lights from the iSSL Maxi 4 range were delivered by Sunna Design to be installed along the Kasavubu Avenue, from Forrest Square to the intersection with Likasi Avenue. Sunna Design’s autonomous street lamp is known for its efficiency, its robustness (guaranteed 10 years without maintenance), and its resistance to even the most extreme temperatures.
Whatever the weather, solar lighting provides with light thanks to its onboard intelligence and its system of energy production, storage and management. One of the advantages of solar lighting is that it allows for significant savings in energy costs. In Lubumbashi, the installation of these solar street lamps saves 1360 KWh each night compared to a traditional lighting system, which represents the average daily consumption of 115 families.
The ecological lighting project entrusted to Congo Energy and Sunna Design is part of a larger rehabilitation project of the Kasavubu Avenue. Between 2019 and 2020, this artery of the city of Lubumbashi has been transformed over 2600 meters length and 17 meters wide. By choosing an intelligent street lighting system, the Democratic Republic of the Congo affirms its will to move towards solutions in line with the challenges of the city of tomorrow.
The modern and sustainable technology of led solar street lights allows to solve both concrete and immediate issues like the fight against darkness and the insecurity that it generates in cities and rural areas, as well as to prepare the future by choosing clean and renewable energy sources, at the same time less costly for the citizens and the environment. Sunna Design is proud to accompany African countries in their energy revolution!
