Sunna Design’s engineering at the service of energy efficiency in cities

Sustainable development has been at the core of Sunna Design’s mission since its creation. In a context marked by rising energy costs and accelerating decarbonization targets for local authorities, solar public lighting is now emerging as a strategic lever to improve cities’ energy performance.

For more than 15 years, Sunna Design has been driving innovation in solar public lighting, actively contributing to the development of the city of tomorrow: more efficient, cleaner, less dependent on the electrical grid, and just as, if not more, effective.

Strongly focused on research and development, with over €20 million invested, Sunna Design relies on cutting-edge engineering to address today’s energy challenges and anticipate the needs of tomorrow’s smart cities through its autonomous solar streetlights and its intelligent renewable energy management platform.

Design: engineering at the heart of intelligent solar public lighting development

Technological innovation serving the energy efficiency of cities is at the core of Sunna Design’s DNA. Every solar public lighting engineering project begins with a comprehensive system approach: energy production, storage, and intelligent management to ensure performance, autonomy, and durability.

With more than €20 million invested in R&D, the company designs high-performance solar public lighting solutions developed to address today’s local authority energy transition challenges.

At the heart of the system is the patented electronic board SunnaCore© and embedded energy intelligence, the true control center of the solar streetlight. It dynamically regulates light intensity according to real needs and available resources, enabling:

optimization of energy consumption
preservation of battery capacity over time
prevention of outages thanks to an anti-blackout function
extended overall system lifespan

Its patented algorithm secures charge and discharge cycles and guarantees maximum service continuity, even in demanding climatic environments (from -40°C to +70°C depending on the product range). To learn more about this topic, discover how to maximize the performance of a solar installation, even in challenging conditions.

This expertise in energy sizing and thermal management makes it possible to offer reliable and high-performance solar streetlights, with luminous efficiencies reaching up to 210 lm/W on certain high-power solutions such as the EverGen range.

Engineering therefore goes beyond the product itself: it relies on a complete intelligent system designed to meet the constraints of both urban and rural environments.

Production: a 4.0 factory for advanced solar public lighting

Sunna Design develops and manufactures its solutions in its own factory located near Bordeaux. Labeled “Factory of the Future”, it embodies agile, responsible, and locally based industrial production.

With a capacity of up to 100,000 products per year and an optimized assembly time of as little as 5 minutes per unit, this industrial tool enables the company to meet large-scale project demands while maintaining the highest quality standards.

The full digitalization of the production line, including connected tools and assisted training systems, improves industrial performance while optimizing working conditions.

Each solar streetlight undergoes:

strict quality controls during pre-production
rigorous functional testing during post-production
compliance with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certifications, at the core of our quality approach.

Eco-design is fully integrated into the industrial process. The streetlights are designed to be disassembled and recycled, with high recyclability rates, particularly for photovoltaic panels and batteries. On this topic, you can read our article: solar streetlights: an ecological solution through recyclability.

This industrial expertise allows Sunna Design to embed its solar public lighting engineering within a circular economy approach and a reduced environmental footprint, in line with our CSR strategy.

Expertise: tailored support for every lighting project

Sunna Design’s engineering expertise is applied at every stage of a solar public lighting project, from initial analysis to commissioning.

From the early stages, technical teams carry out:

a comprehensive solar study
a detailed photometric analysis
precise battery sizing
an evaluation of service continuity risks

The objective is clear: ensure optimal energy autonomy and guarantee lighting continuity 365 nights per year.

Environmental analysis (sun exposure, shading, road typology, and usage patterns) allows lighting profiles to be adapted to the specific needs of each public space: roads & streets, parking areas, bike paths, industrial zones, or residential districts.

This tailored approach ensures:

reduced energy expenses
reduced light pollution
performance compliant with lighting standards

Today, more than 170,000 products have been installed in 60 countries, demonstrating the robustness of this engineering approach in diverse climatic and regulatory environments.

Monitoring & After-Sales Service: intelligent and sustainable solar public lighting management

Intelligent solar public lighting requires equally intelligent management. Sunna Design has developed its own digital tools to provide local authorities with autonomous, precise, and proactive system control.

For local supervision, SunnApp© (Bluetooth) enables:

lighting profile management
real-time performance monitoring
operational history tracking
installation and commissioning support

These tools allow municipalities to shift from reactive maintenance to predictive maintenance, optimizing operational costs and equipment lifespan.

Post-installation support is a key pillar of Sunna Design’s approach. If necessary, full technical assistance is provided, with the possibility of on-site intervention.

Expertise: a partner supporting the energy transition of cities

Renovating public lighting means acting concretely on:

energy cost control
carbon footprint reduction
citizens’ safety and quality of life

Public lighting can represent up to 30–40% of a municipality’s electricity consumption. Switching to autonomous solar public lighting eliminates electricity costs associated with lighting points while significantly reducing CO₂ emissions compared with grid-powered lighting.

Sunna Design solutions are configurable, connected, and adaptable to all environments: urban areas, road extensions, parking areas, remote locations, or smart city projects.

Without heavy trenching work or connection to the electrical grid, installation is fast (5 to 15 minutes depending on the model) and greatly reduces disruption for residents.
