Home Solar lighting blog Case studies Securing a secluded roundabout with solar lighting
In Marines, the roundabout connecting the CV-25 and CV-333 roads plays a key role in traffic flow. However, it lacked any form of lighting, compromising nighttime visibility and increasing the risk of accidents. Its distance from the power grid made traditional connection both complex and costly, requiring heavy work and major traffic disruptions. To secure the area without impacting traffic, a dozen Sunna Design solar streetlights were installed.
Marines – SPAIN
The absence of lighting on this roundabout posed a risk to both drivers and cyclists using the adjacent bike lane. Limited visibility, especially at night or during adverse weather conditions, increased the risk of late braking and collisions.
Connecting the site to the power grid would have required expensive underground cabling works, causing road closures and significant inconvenience to users. For the Conselleria of Valencia, the challenge was to find a quick and non-intrusive solution.
Solar lighting quickly emerged as the ideal answer: autonomous, efficient, and with no impact on traffic flow.
Marines’ roundabout is now lit by UP4 solar streetlights, a stand-alone solution designed for isolated road infrastructures. This model stands out for its exceptional lighting performance and enhanced autonomy, making it perfectly suited to the site’s conditions.
Each UP4 unit features four adjustable 40 Wp solar panels, maximizing energy capture throughout the day. The result: reinforced autonomy, even in low sunlight, and reliable lighting 365 nights a year.
To ensure optimal visibility across every part of the roundabout, two configurations were deployed:
Each streetlight includes Sunna Design’s proprietary SunnaCore controller, enabling smart energy management based on available resources. This embedded intelligence optimizes power use while ensuring safety.
Another major advantage: ultra-fast deployment. Each streetlight was installed and activated in under 15 minutes, no trenches, no disruptions. With the SunnAPP mobile app, local teams can easily configure lighting scenarios, monitor system performance, and carry out maintenance directly at the base of the pole.
Thanks to these autonomous, connected technologies, the Marines’ roundabout now benefits from reliable, smart lighting. Safety is improved, while environmental impact and infrastructure costs are significantly reduced.
This project proves that isolated roads and intersections can be safely illuminated without grid access.
For municipalities seeking to modernize their public lighting, this turnkey solar solution provides a powerful alternative: autonomous, high-performance, and quick to install. It addresses local governments’ goals for safety, cost efficiency, and ecological transition.
The UP1 is a reliable and robust stand-alone solar lighting solution, particularly suitable for pedestrian, bicycle path and car park lighting. This innovative product offers a very simple and fast installation with un- matched performance and connected services such as SunnAPP.
