Home Solar lighting blog Case studies Emergency solar lighting at the entrance of Gift Hill School in US Virgin Islands
When two Category 5 hurricanes, Irma and Maria battered the U.S. Virgin Islands last year, most of the territory’s infrastructure was destroyed.
The remaining schools were damaged to the extent that they could not reopen soon enough to save the school year for local students.
Within five days, the only high school on the island of St. John, the Gift Hill School, reopened with the decision to take on all the island’s students who wanted to attend and waive tuition for the year.
To light up the areas surrounding the school, Sunna Design’s UP2 range was selected.
This autonomous solar solution is robust and resistant to wind, which enables an optimal functioning in regions with extreme weather conditions and subject to hurricanes.
Today, the Gift Hill School consists of an Early Learning Center, a separate library and classrooms, and the large middle and upper school building where the new solar lighting has been installed to secure the area.
This project was implemented in partnership with Recovered Energy Technologies and Paul Pono.
