Home Solar lighting blog Roads and streets Autonomous solar lighting for an isolated road in Orvinio
Orvinio is a charming mountain town a few miles from Viterbo in central Italy. The municipality faced a significant challenge: a remote, hard-to-reach road needed more public lighting, posing a significant safety risk for residents, especially at night. The town, faced with the high costs and technical difficulties of installing traditional lighting in such rugged terrain, sought a more suitable alternative. In collaboration with Elettrica Di Paolo Inlux Agency and Mr. Giuseppe Frezza, Sunna Design proposed a fully autonomous solar lighting solution that perfectly addressed the site’s constraints.
Orvinio – ITALY
The municipality of Orvinio set several key criteria for this project. They needed a solution to optimize energy consumption while providing sufficient illumination to ensure road safety. Additionally, the lighting had to blend seamlessly into the mountainous landscape to preserve the area’s natural aesthetic. Finally, the installation had to be quick and efficient, as the challenging topography made heavy cabling work impossible. Sunna Design met this challenge by offering high-performance, easy-to-install, and fully autonomous solar streetlights.
The project’s constraints highlighted the flexibility and adaptability of Sunna Design’s solar solutions. As the solar streetlights are designed to operate autonomously without connection to the electrical grid, they were quickly installed in under 15 minutes per unit. This swift setup minimized traffic disruption on the isolated road, ensuring minimal user inconvenience.
Two models from Sunna Design’s UP range were chosen to meet Orvinio’s needs. Four UP1 units were installed to provide efficient yet discreet lighting, while two UP2 units were placed in areas requiring a broader light spread. These solutions deliver uniform illumination across the road while blending harmoniously into the natural surroundings.
The project has had an immediate positive impact on the safety of Orvinio’s residents. Previously shrouded in darkness, the road now benefits from reliable lighting without the high costs associated with traditional wired infrastructure. Moreover, in the long run, these solar streetlights will not increase the municipality’s energy expenses since they run entirely on solar power. This will enable the town to continuously save money while reducing its carbon footprint. By choosing this innovative solution, the municipality of Orvinio has firmly committed to sustainable development while easing its long-term financial burden. This project exemplifies the benefits of solar street lighting for communities with hard-to-reach areas or complex topographies unsuitable for traditional public works.

In Benin, the strategic road linking Ouedo to Tori-Bossito has undergone a major transformation, symbolizing national infrastructure development. The Colas Group, the project’s lead contractor, supervised the construction and paving of the road, while a local partner installed 551 solar streetlights from the EverGen range. Today, these streetlights provide sustainable and secure lighting across […]
In Santa Eugenia, a municipality of Majorca in the Balearic Islands, the lack of lighting on Camí de s’Hostalet has made night-time travel on this road challenging. After considering various types of streetlights, the local government selected solar solutions from Sunna Design for their quality, performance, and warranties. Road and street […]
