Solar streetlights: An End-to-End Ecological Solution throught recycling

Sustainable lighting goes beyond clean energy consumption; it must also be designed to minimize environmental impact throughout its lifecycle, including its end-of-life phase. Sunna Design’s autonomous and self-sufficient solar streetlights are built for longevity and ease of recycling. Their design allows for optimized disassembly of components to maximize reuse and reduce waste.

Sunna Design collaborates directly with recycling partners to ensure optimal handling of all streetlight components, including packaging and production scraps.

Photovoltaic Solar Panels a Nearly Perfect Recycling

The photovoltaic solar panels used in our lighting systems have a lifespan exceeding 25 years. They retain about 80% of their initial power even after this period. Advanced recycling techniques achieve a 96% recovery rate, efficiently reclaiming and repurposing components while significantly reducing environmental footprint.

Components and Recycling of a Solar Panel

  • 70% Glass: Fully recyclable.
  • 10% Plastics: Reusable.
  • 8% Aluminum: Infinitely recyclable.
  • 5% Silicon: Recycling processes are being optimized

Since 2012, photovoltaic panels have been subject to European Directive 2002/96/EC, mandating their collection and treatment at end-of-life. Sunna Design partners with the eco-organization Soren in France to ensure effective recycling management.

Batteries a Responsible Resource Management

Our solar streetlights can be equipped with two types of batteries: NiMH and LiFePO. Designed for longevity, these batteries have lifespans exceeding 20 years, with recycling rates varying by technology :

  • NiMH (Nickel-Metal Hydride) Batteries: High recyclability between 85% and 95%. Metals like nickel are extracted through thermal processes (pyrometallurgy) and reused, notably in stainless steel production.
  • LiFePO4 (Lithium Iron Phosphate) Batteries: Recycling rates around 65%. The process is more complex, requiring specific methods to extract lithium and other metals.

In France, Corepile, our recycling partner, manages the collection and processing of these batteries, contributing to a circular economy and preservation of natural resources.

SunnaCore: the patented electronic board that is also recyclable

All Sunna Design streetlights feature SunnaCore, our patented electronic card that intelligently manages solar energy. It regulates LED light intensity, optimizing energy savings and storage.

SunnaCore contains about thirty metals, including precious and critical ones. Precious metals are fully recyclable, while recycling processes for critical metals are under development.

LED Lantern: High performance and Recyclability

LED lighting is crucial for solar streetlight performance. Sunna Design’s LED modules offer high luminous efficiency and lifespans of over 100,000 hours. Their 95% recyclability stems from modular design:

  • Aluminum Housing: 100% infinitely recyclable.
  • Electronic Components (diodes, transformers, semiconductors): 95% recyclable through Ecosystem.
  • Polycarbonate Lenses: Reusable for new applications.

Preventive Maintenance: Enhancing Durability for Solar Streetlight

Sunna Design has developed innovative monitoring solutions to help its clients better manage their lighting networks and optimize maintenance operations. Our tools are designed to provide accurate performance tracking of solar streetlights, offering diagnostics and facilitating preventive and corrective maintenance implementation. This approach maximizes the lifespan of our products and enhances their energy efficiency. Regular maintenance extends the service life of the streetlights and helps prevent premature replacements.

Sunna Design’s two advanced monitoring tools:

  • SunnAPP mobile application: On-site performance monitoring directly at the base of the pole.
  • SunnaCloud platform: Remote performance management and proactive maintenance planning.

Together, these tools ensure the optimal operation of solar streetlights throughout their entire lifecycle.

Solar Streetlights an Autonomous and Sustainable Solution

Sunna Design’s commitment goes beyond simply designing high-performance solar streetlights. The company takes a comprehensive approach to reducing environmental impact by ensuring a long product lifespan, facilitating maintenance, and optimizing recyclability.

Since its creation, Sunna Design has been dedicated to providing eco-friendly lighting solutions. Through its recycling network, it ensures efficient management of each component. With an optimized lifecycle, Sunna Design’s solar streetlights combine durability, performance, and environmental responsibility.
