In Ipoh, the capital of Perak State in Malaysia, Bulatan Sultan Azlan Shah is no ordinary roundabout. This large intersection has been fully redeveloped into a vibrant public space: pedestrian zones, night markets, green areas and meeting places make it a central hub of local life.
To support this urban transformation and improve safety for users, local authorities chose to modernize the site’s lighting with 75 iSSL Maxi Road solar streetlights from Sunna Design. A reliable, cable-free and long-lasting solution, perfectly suited for this lively urban environment—especially during large public events.

An iconic roundabout turned into a living space
Each year, the site hosts large public events, including the popular Ramadan bazaar, with:
Lighting plays a key role in ensuring safety, comfort, and the appeal of this lively area, which is active from 4:00 PM until 12:30 AM.
The project was initiated by the Perak State Development Corporation (PKNPk) and rolled out in multiple phases. The goal was clear: upgrade the lighting system with a cable-free, easy-to-install solution that withstands tropical climate conditions. 75 iSSL Maxi Road solar streetlights were selected for their performance, autonomy, and discreet integration in public space.
Reliable and even lighting helps increase safety in transit areas. Families, merchants, and visitors can enjoy the site with peace of mind, even at night.
The solar solution removes the need for electrical connections and significantly reduces long-term energy expenses for the community.
The phased deployment (39 streetlights in phase one) provides budget flexibility and allows the system to evolve with local needs.
With a total budget of 970,000 RM, this project reflects the state’s ambition to modernize public spaces through clean technologies, placing solar power at the heart of Perak’s infrastructure strategy.
